Along with our regular contributors who fly fishes, I got a hold of Serge who is a crazy avid fly fisherman. He use to routinely catch bonefish and permit from his Kayak out of Biscayne Bay. I talked to him about adding some of his great content to Saltyshores and was very happy to do so. He does not get out as much as he use to like most people but he still has some great content we could use. Bellow is some information about Serge which came off his website: http://kayakflatfishing.com

A little bit about me:(Serge Thomas)

My name is Serge Thomas and I am also known as “The French guy” or “Serge” on the various flyfishing bulletin boards. I am a Ph.D. researcher at the Southeast Environmental Research Center hosted by Florida International University. I work on the Everglades and Florida Bay restoration (should rather say rehabilitation). My main field of expertise is the study of algae (attached=periphyton and free floating= phytoplankton) and how these algae can be used to: 1) assess the hydrosystem health accurately and 2) clean the water in phytoremediation settings. I also focus on fundamental research questions such as how stable are shallow hydrosystems and how these can switch suddenly, under heavy nutrient load, to an unhealthy turbid system dominated by (harmful) algal blooms. Understanding how these shallow ecosystems function, will allow us to better rehabilitate them. I also occasionally teach the science of Fishes (Ichthyology) at a grad/undergrad level at Florida International University.

But enough about my scientific background. I am also a passionate fly fisherman who nearly exclusively sight flyfish for the big three (read tarpon, bonefish and permit) in South Florida. The particularity about my fishing is that I use a kayak as a boat. Once mastered, this ecological craft, is the best flats boat of all provided you do not need to cover too much water (<7 miles). From a kayak you can land all kind of fishes, even big ones.

I also have the passion for flyfishing gear, and thus, I test all kind of gear ranging from fly rods, fly reels, fly lines, sunglasses, pliers etc. The gear tested is presented in this web site. Realize that although I try to be as objective as possible, these reviews cannot be completely unbiaised ones. Thus, I highly recommend you see and test by yourself the equipment reviewed here. Please, send me an email if you agree or disagree with my reviews. This will greatly benefit the fly fishing community.

I hope you will enjoy this site.

Tight lines and loops.
