Fishing TV show host Jose Wejebe Killed in a plane cash in Everglades City, Florida April 6th 2012

Update April 9th 2012: Celebration of Life to be held at the IGFA April 15th
Very sad news tonight. Fishing TV show host Jose Wejebe, the spanish fly tv show was killed today in a plane crash in Everglades City Florida.

I first met Jose at friend Derek Redwine’s house in 2009. Before I met Jose, he has always been held as a mythical fishing god to me. When we met, Jose could not have been cooler. I have seen him at all major fishing event since then, most recent being at the Miami boat show at Hells Bay boatwork’s booth. Though I never had a chance to work with him, he has always been cordial and super cool to me.

Jose had one of the best fishing show on TV and was a pioneer in many aspect of it. He has inspired many generations of fisherman including everyone here at Saltyshores.

On behalf of the Saltyshores family, R.I.P. Jose, you will be missed in the fishing world.

Cooking Salmon perfectly with the Sony NEX-7, Using Stan’s stuff seasonings

3.31.2012

Here is a video and photo of a baked salmon dish I made today. The point of the video is to test out the new Sony NEX-7 camera. This is new mirrorless aps-c sensor camera with interchangeable lense. At 24 megapixel and full HD in a small body you can carry around with you. Here I am shooting at iso 800, 18-55 kit lens. As you can see it looks pretty darn good.

The still was shot with out flash and cropped down from 24MP.

Now for the food part.

Since I’m so A.D.D. I find it hard to keep on task especially when I”m cooking. It’s either under cooked or over cooked. So for me to get edible food I have to use a timer with a temperature sensor.

First I season the salmon with Stan’s Stuff seasoning. Stan’s is made right here in the Florida panhandle. If you have not used it, it is an excellent all around spice. I have a cupboard full of seasonings and this is the one I use 90% of the time for fish, chicken, steak and veggies. It pretty much replaces my salt and pepper for cooking.

  • I preheat the oven to 350 degrees on baked.
  • I heat the pan on high with some olive oil.
  • I then sear the fish on both side from 30 to 45 seconds.
  • After putting the temperature sensor into the thickest part of the fish I stick it in the oven.
  • Once the core temperature of the fish reaches 130 degrees it’s perfectly done.
  • I take it out of the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minute so all the goodies stay inside.

I do the same with chicken breast. It is perfectly cooked at 160 degrees.

Updates 3.11.2012

Just got back a few hours ago from a week at Long Island Bahamas. Besides a quick email check at the local phone company, I had no internet access, no phone, and no TV for 7 days. That means no updates on Saltyshores.

We did some wade fishing for bonefish at DIY lodge at Deadman’s Cay, Long Island Bahamas. Very cool concept if you are looking for Bahama bone fishing trip and want to save a few dollars.

The weather kind of beat us up a bit the first few days, but when the sun came out, the scenery was phenomenal.

Not much time to download all the images at the moment but I will be working on a write up here in the next day or two about the trip.

Stand UP Paddle board fishing, SUP Flats fishing

3.1.2012

One thing about fishing is that you can choose your method. What ever interest you the most that is what you do. If you like to bait fish so be it. Many like use artificial lures and many like to fly fish. Then of course comes the choice of vessel you choose to fish out of. There is wading, skiffs, baby boats, kayaks, canoes, sports fishing boat, jon boats, and center consoles.

Though I love all types of fishing, kayak fishing to get super skinny and stealthy(winter time) is one of my favorites. The thing I do not like so much about kayak fishing, is the fact you have to be sitting down most of the time. Not that you can not catch fish sitting down, sometimes you just want to see fish or stretch a bit.

When I saw all the stand up paddle board(SUP) at Surf Expo in Orlando recently, I was interested in using it to fish out of. There were a few there set up already for fishing.A quick youtube search and I found people catching tarpon, sail fish, red fish already out of SUP(Stand up Paddleboard).

This got me into research mode. I find that the Drangonfly Paddle board was made right here in Florida. They had some great ideas in the SUP fishing arena. With a V entry for quietness and toe rails to channel water away and out from your feet an gear it was worth a look.

A stop over at the factory and a demo ride had me buying one last month. I got to choose my colors from bottom, top, Sea Dek, and all kinds of options. I wanted mine pretty basic since I would to use it to exercise as well.

I got lucky and they had my colors in stock(white bottom, light blue top and light grey Sea Dek), it took less than two weeks to finish. The problem is with the Salty Fly to run I had no time to use it.

I finally got a chance to take it out today and I gotta say it was really fun. SUP Fishing is definitely not the most efficient way to fish but it’s a blast, not to mention it is great core exercise. You just get to see and it is just more comfortable when I’m casting, especially fly casting.

Only fishing for about 2 hours and I wound up catching a couple redfish on the Top Dog in about 1′ of water. Super quiet, stealthy and it feels like you’re walking on water.

For my first trip it wasn’t too bad. Now I need to figure out all the stuff I need and don’t need to bring on board for a day of fishing.

The ultimate goal this year is to get a nice Tarpon on the SUP and go for a sleigh ride. Then it’s to get a tarpon on fly on the SUP. Hey, one can dream can’t I? :)

Shots done on the iphone or Nikon AW100 point and shoot.

If you guys are going to the Tampa Outdoor Expo this weekend, I’ll have it at the Wang Anchor Booth so you can check it out.

Salty Fly 2012 Results, G.Loomis Skiff Challenge Results

The Salty Fly 2012, Super Bowl of Fly fishing weekend has come to a closed. 65 teams competing the gold and support from some of the biggest players in the game of Fly fishing it was a blow out fly fishing event.

Despite the not so favorable weather forecast every single team showed up for the 6am check in that morning. The party and live broadcast ensued at 3pm at Momma Iguana for drinks and libations. The Hells bay title sponsorship took this 2nd annual event over the top this year. We had so many people there and the parking was so congested Winn Dixie for the fist time complained that they ran out of parking for the their customers.

The 3 day event was a huge success and hope many of you can join us next year.

We have many more photos and videos to share but right for now I will just give you the results because I have to get some sleep.
