Doa C.A.L. figi chicken, perfect for winter time fishing in Tampa

Today I took friend Loran and Brad out for some fun fishing near the house. It was a bit windy otherwise though it was a gorgeous day out. Temperature in the mid to high 60’s and plenty of sun shine.

Our plan was to just blind cast pot holes to get into some of the local inshore species. I grabbed a box of DOA lures and immediately rigged on the CAL shad tails. Using the 1/4 oz jig heads to get to the bottom fast was the key to success.  I would cast it as far as I could (for best coverage ) in about 2-3 feet of water and bounce it back to the boat.

Normally my favorite color is the Gold Rush but I had ran out. Today I picked the Figi Chicken (411). Yeah crazy name but it worked great today. We caught 6 reds 4 trout and 4 flounders in all. I wonder if we would have done better if I had the old “Gold Rush” in the mix. I will have to run out and grab a pack and give it a go again.

We packed it in about 1pm to grab some lunch at the local dive Grannies on US 41(if you’re in the area and hungry for some country cooking it’s a good stop and cheap too)… Fun day mission accomplished.

Photo note: All photos shot with a point and shoot SONY NEX-3. Stock 18-55mm lens.

We ended the day at Grannies for a little late lunch. If you’re looking for good eats at fast food prices stop here. The service is good, the food is good and the prices are excellent. It’s a hole in the wall but you can’t beat it for good old fashion Country cooking.
