Tarpon Eat using the Kodak Playsport and sunglasses for polarize filter

1.31.2011

This was shot down in Duck Key during the shoot for 2011 Saltwater Experience TV show. I shot all the footage on the $150.00 kodak playsport(actually $108 right now at Amazon.com). I used my sunglasses over the lens as a polarize filter. This way you can actually see in the water.

Here you see Rich Tudor poling Tom Rowland Around. There were tarpon every where that refused to eat. We finally found one that took the fly. One of their best shows imho.

This was shot in 720 in 60fps mode for better slow motion.

25lb redfish ate the fly 5′ from the boat, very cool.

This was shot while fishing with Tom and Greg Dini a couple weeks a go.

Lakeland Pigfest 2011 video final edit

Lakeland Pigfest 2011 BBQ

Shot all the footage at the Lakeland Pigfest 2011. All with the Sony Nex cameras. I think the footage came out pretty good. Considering all the crowd noise I’m pretty impressed with the audio quality of it.

I believe I will using this more and more for fishing footage as well.

Pig Fest 2011 in Lakeland Florida with Rod Gray of Pellet Envy

1.29.2011

Award winning Brisket by Rod Gray.
PigFest 2011 in Lakeland Florida. I was over at the Lakeland Pigfest this weekend hanging out with Josh and the competition BBQ guys. Rod Gray of Pellet Envy was cool enough to talk to us the time we were there. I did not realize BBQ was this intense of competition. I mean these guys got everything down to a science.

The really serious guys don’t even sell their food at these competition. They just go there cook, let the judge taste it and leave for the next competition. Needless to say I did get to eat the competition level BBQ. I have to say, it is night and day between what they are giving to the judges and what we are getting at the local restaurants. I think I’m completely spoiled now when it comes to BBQ.

I also met a couple other guys from the PItmaster TV Show, Johnny Trigg and Tuffy from cool smokes.

Little Habana, Cuban Cafe in Riverview Florida

1.26.2011

Little Habana Cafe has been open in my area of almost  a year now. It took the place of a really tasty Caribbean joint called Christine, which I hated to see go. For ethnic foods that was close to my house Christine was one of my favorites. Especially the goat there. :)

Today after some driving around Hank and I decided to try the place out. A small place located right off the interstate (I-75) in the typical shopping plaza. The interior was well lit and the decor was nicely done.  The place was clean and they greeted us right away as we walked in.

Looking at the menu, they had the typical yellow rice and chicken etc. But what caught my eye was the Ox tail. This is a very good dish that can only be found in the deepest areas of ethnic group. I was surprise to see this on the menu here.

Having Ox tail on the menu however, hinted that the  food would be authentic, not a watered down version of Cuban food. I ordered the ox tail and my friend Hank ordered the fried pork. They came with two sides. I picked the rice and plantains.   The food came out fairly quickly. The plating was plain but no complaints from me. After all, the pricing was fair with the average dinner dish being about $10.00-12.00 and lunch a little cheaper.

Besides the rice being a tad on the dry side, the food was good especially the main dish. We were asked several time if we needed anything so I have to say the service was very good as well. We got out the of there with total tab of $24.00 for two people and drinks.  Not too bad for good authentic Cuban fare. It’s definitely worth a try if you are ever in the area and feel the need for some good ethic eats.

25 feet poling skiff?

1.26.2011

Flat’s Fisher 25′

I first bump into Clint over at last Year’s Miami Boat show. We were at the Hellsbay booth checking things out. He came up to me and told me he was a big fan of the website and thought it was cool. I thanked him for visiting. He then mention some projects he had been working on. One was a stripping basket but the other was a 25′ poling boat/skiff. My reaction was the typical “wow! really?”. After that I didn’t think much of it.

To my surprise last week I got an email from Clint about his boat. He reintroduced himself and included his website. Sure enough the website shows a 25′ boat being poled.

Yes I repeat, a 25′ Poling skiff prototype boat. I would imaging it rides really really well and poles great. My only concern is the turning and of course the obvious effort of actually poling into the wind current etc.

I guess I will have to wait to check it out. Best of Luck with the project Clint!

Not much information on the website but he said there is more to come: www.flatsflyer.com

South Carolina Coastal Waterfowl by Jay Nelson

South Carolina Coastal Waterfowl

The water temp in the South Carolina marsh dropped to an icy 39 degrees last week. Redfish don’t have a lot of spunk to them when the water gets that cold. We decided to take the weekend off from fishing to do a little duck hunting before the season closes. South Carolina has an abundant population of wood ducks (aka summer ducks) so we decided to go capitalize. Not only are these ducks beautiful, but they make excellent table fare as well. We had a great weekend and took home a good number of birds from the local freshwater marshes. After a killer meal, I used some of the flank feathers from one of the birds to tie a new redfish fly called the “summer duck” – can’t wait to get it wet!

Where in the Hell is Matt?

1.25.2011

This has absolutely nothing to do with fishing or photography. It does however has to do with the spirit of travel and adventure. It is also uplifting in a way. Every time I see this video I somehow feel a bit inspired. I posted this a couple years ago and ran across it again recently and I thought I would share it once again.

In 2003 Matt was a video game designer working in Australia. He lost his job and decided to take the savings that he had and traveled the world on a budget. He posted a video of himself dancing a different locations around the world for family and friends. Somehow it caught on a became viral and ended up with millions of views.

Stride gum took noticed, decided to get Matt to do it again.. very cool story.

You can read all about it on his website: http://www.wherethehellismatt.com

If the world does have a common thread, it is song and dance.

The news story what is Matt doing these days.
