“Test” Mac
I have had a few issues uploading images to Salty Shores straight from my Mac without using an online photo place holder such as Photobucket. I have found that I loose that high res photo very easily. I am just trying a different method still using photobucket but at least now I am able to upload….hopefully!! If this works I will start uploading images and stories from the past month or so…..BTW – Schooling redfish are in full force in my area right now!!!!

Headaches today, but got to go shopping, exofficio underwear, Flintcreek outfitters
8.24.2010
Today started out pretty crappy. I had to deal with an ongoing roof leak in the garage. This thing was quite annoying as we couldn’t find where it was coming from. It’s been going on for a couple months now and we’ve tried all kinds of patches to no avail. It only happen when it was heavy rain as well so small drizzle it didn’t come in the garage.
It was raining most of the day today hard so it made it easy to see the leak but still not where it was coming from. By noon though we found out the gutter was overflowing on the 2nd floor and dumping water into the wall. So we moved the gutter and it seems to fix the problem. Now I have to wait til the next heavy rain to make sure 100%.
I come into the house to take a breather and get caught up only to find my water softener had blown up and spewing all kinds of crap into my water system. !@$#@!$#!@$!@$. Time to call the plumber in. Luckily he was around the corner and it only cost me $100 to get it all straitening out.
By now it’s 3pm and the entire day was basically wasted doing house stuff.
Thinking about more pleasurable things in life like my upcoming Colorado trip, I decided to make the drive over to Flint Creek outfitters. Normally when I need outdoor gear I make the drive to St. Pete to Bill Jacksons which is normally an hour away and during this time of day more like 1.5 hours. Flint Creek from Apollobeach took me about 20-25minutes or so. I’m glad there is some place close by for outdoor gear.
I picked up some Exofficio pants, and the best underwear ever the Exofficio Give-n-Go. I’m tough on my gear so I’m always tearing up clothes out there. I jump in the saltwater taking photos and wear them in the sun pretty much all day so I’m constantly going through gear. When you to get your cotton underwear wet it pretty much stays wet most of the day. The microfiber underwear dries fast and lasts.

The microfiber underwear dries fast and last.
I also picked up a couple of those roll up dry bags. This will keep wallets, keys, cell phones nice, safe and dry. I got them in bright yellow so I won’t loose them again!
Swimming with some wild dolphins offshore Tampa Bay about 70miles out

When I was offshore last week and got the dolphin photos I also took down the Kodak Playsport with me. I got some interesting videos. Here is the raw video footage I shot and quickly put together tonight. No fancy editing etc.
Vail Colorado Trout fishing using my Mystic Rod and Nautilus NV 5 weight combo
8.23.2010
As the week gets rolling my next cool trip I’m looking forward to doing is a trout fishing trip to Vail Colorado. I am there to visit my buddy Lane to do some fishing and of course photo opportunities. I have never been to Colorado and would love to check things out. I really don’t have much time as I’m only there for the weekend however.
Since I’m not a big freshwater fly fisherman I really don’t have any good gear to bring up there. All the fly gear I have are 8 weight to 12 weight which is way over kill for use on trout. A few days ago I put a post on Facebook and immediately got lots of suggestions, offers of places to stay and gear to borrow. At this point I guess all my faith in humanity has not been lost. After the theft of my gear, it definitely ran across my mind a few times.
My friend is loaning me his 5 weight Nautilus NV. The company Mystic Outdoors asked me if I wanted to test out their rod while I was up there and sent me a demo to use.. way cool!
Side Note: Before I forget I want to thank everyone that has sent me emails and messages about my gear lost and offers of help. I really appreciate the kind thoughts and offers of help. Right now I have not heard anything. I have a small hope but I am definitely not holding my breath.
Purging out the Summer time Frustrations…
The heat of the summer has arrived and the migration of ocean run Tarpon is all but gone. The bonefishing is now dependant on days with a good amount of rain to cool down the boiling water temperatures. Redfishing is red hot as these fish love to school up in Flamingo during periods of high heat and low winds for some odd reason. There are a plethora of big trout and snapper that have taken up residency in the deeper potholes and even up on the backcountry flats. Large numbers of breeder Snook that have survived this past cold winter have piled into the inlets along the east coast of Florida to take part in replenishing our lost snook population. It should be a matter of time now before the rains push the baby tarpon out of the inland estuaries in the Everglades and send them out onto the shallow flats to hunt for shrimp, small baitfish, and deer hair sliders. The heat of summer is definitely here and sadly enough, even though the days of sitting at my favorite point on the ocean side waiting for tarpon are a thing of the past (for now), there should be enough things to do to keep this tarpon junkie busy until they return. It’s a good time to explore the less explored, rediscover some old roots, and take adavantage of the diversity that surrounds us in south Florida.
Many anglers have taken to the flats to hunt down the schools of redfish that swim the shallow flats of Flamingo this time of year. These fish are eager to eat well placed topwaters, flies, and DOA soft plastics. There is something to be said about laying your fly amongst a huge school of redfish and stripping in anticipation to come tight but there is definitely something very special about watching that school of redfish try to lift their heads out of the water to devour a topwater plug. This type of insanity keeps me sane this time of year. Redfish are probably the dumbest creatures alive when they get bunched up into a giant hoarding school. I am dead serious…. they really are. You know that supply of “reject” flies you have laying around…. it’s a great time of year to use those things up now. Now when you encounter a single tailing redfish… they may sometimes require as much finesse as a bonefish to feed. That is what makes this bi-polar fish such a cool fish to stick a hook into.
Those summer time bones… they are a true pain in the ass sometimes. The lighting sucks 5 days out of 6 this time of year and those little silver frustrations will tail in one spot, move 10 feet without making a single wake, and tail in the next making them tough to spot and predict. Who would want to fish for something that unpredictable? These tailing bonefish in shallow water are nothing like the aggressive mudders you encounter when the sun is high. The lack of wind makes bonefishing much more of a finesse game this time of year. You wait and wait and wait, until you get that right shot, but wait too long and the fish will take notice that you are secretly stalking it like a phsycho ex-lover. While on one of my charters, I mentioned to my client… “anyone who wants to subject themselves to these fish must be a massicus.” There are times when that shot is just right and all the stars line up… your line didn’t coil up, the fish are swiming right to where your fly landed, and you finally feel your line tug back as you make that initial strip… This is why summer time bonefish are my favorite summer time frustration.
I rarely get a chance to fish the inlets along the East coast of Florida for the big summer time snook, but I did get a chance to experience a little bit of this fishery one day. What would have seemed like an easy fishery is actually a lot more involved then I had intially thought. From catching that bloody bait to finding the right way to present it to these big weary snook, it is definitely a challenge. We went to the inlet in hopes of finding me a big snook to photograph. Catching bait sucked… watching 100 big snook under your boat snuff your offering sucked… but having one dumb fish make a mistake of eating the wrong sardine made it worth while for the camera lens.
A new beginning starts soon as I await the transition of the Fall fishing season with a new skiff; some world class bonefishing, and knock you on your face fun fishing in the red minnow-rich Gulf waters awaits. Stay tuned…
How to tie the EP Sparkle Toad
Ok, I will come clean. I hate spoon flies. I said it.
Fly Fishing with Spoon flies is really a Love-hate relationship. I can make a case for either side. I caught my first Redfish on a Dupre Spoon fly. They have great movement in the water and they are flashy. BUT they cast like a train reck! They are very prone to those nasty wind knots in your leader because they don’t turn over well (if at all in the wind). And because they don’t turn over well your accuracy is almost gone. By the end of the day you are really happy with the fly or super frustrated.
One day I was over in Orlando and found this sweet little fly that looked like it would solve my Spoon Fly Frustration. The EP Sparkle Toad. I bought a couple and threw them around with much success. I went online to buy some more and couldn’t find them! So it was time to start making my own. It’s a toad fly so the pattern is simple, but the materials make it difficult. Tying with EP Sparkle is on par with glitter, so you have been warned. But like glitter there is a learning curve on using it. The more you use it the less you have in material loss.
How to tie the EP Sparkle Toad
Thread: Tan/Brown Flat Wax Nylon
Hook: SC15 #1
Eyes: Medium Beadchain
Body: EP Sparkle
Tail: Tan Marabou
Weedguard: 30lb Mason Hard Mono (optional)
Step 1: Start your thread at the front and work it just beyond the bend. Bring your thread back to the shank. This will give you a solid foundation for tying.

Step 2: Tie in your marabou. You want the total length of the fly to be about 3″.

Step 3: Tie in your EP Sparkle. Simply I do two turns one direction, and two turns in the other. This allows you to move the EP Sparkle into place before securing with two turns in front.

Step 4: Continue step 3 until your EP Sparkle is near the eye of the hook. Make sure you keep your stacks of EP Sparkle tight together.

Step 5: Tie in your beadchain and weedguard. Trim the EP Sparkle to get the shape you want.

Throw it at fish in the same situations that you would throw the Spoon Fly! This Redfish pushed the fly all the way to the surface in a foot and a half with his bow wake until he got it in his mouth! I swear my heart stopped!

Hunting slow, fishing great
I’ve been fishing and hunting this past week like crazy, I just can’t get enough. I have seen plenty of deer this week but not able to get close enough to make a great shot. O’well, this is the way it goes. I came across a little spot that is holding a bunch of tarpon, baby tarpon. We hooked into 3 yesterday but couldn’t close the deal. I tried with my fly rod but they had me beat. We were hooking into them with top water lures and suspending twitch baits. I did however catch a little snook on the fly, I am loving fly fishing more and more. Yesterday I found a nice pod of reds that were so kind to give us a taste of their fighting ability. The outgoing tide did us right! Check out the last photo, this is some serious back country fishing but very very close to civilization and no one ever goes there. Now that is bad ass!
Mirage Fused…
Welcome to the Third Chapter in the construciton of my next Maverick Mirage…. Fused
The construction of my new Maverick Mirage is near completion. I visited the Maverick Boat Co. plant this past week and got to take the first in person glance at my new skiff. The color combination looks great in photos but even better in person. I can’t wait to bring her home. While at the factory, I got to watch the masterminds fuse the hull and the cap of my boat together. After I had lunch with the whole Maverick Boat Co. administration, Tyler of Castaway Customs met up with me and installed the under gunnel seadeck pads. The work definitely speaks for itself as the quality of Tyler’s work is second to none. Here are some photos from my visit north…
Stay tuned for the next chapter… Refined…
Annual Le Keys trip
Once a year my family and friends get to together usually at the beginning of August for the opening of Florida Spiney Lobster season. It all started when I was probably 10 years old, my parents and siblings would cram into a van and make the drive down to Marathon from Orlando, FL. with camping gear, cookware, snorkel and fishing gear strapped to the top. Every day we were either fishing from a bridge or in the water catching lobster to bring back to the camp so my mom could cook us breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We basically lived off the land and sea for a week while rinsing off at the local gas stations water hose with a bar of soap for our shower. Years pass as we grew older, my brothers and sister started having families of their own and getting too busy with work that they couldn’t make the annual trip anymore and my mom couldn’t make it due to her health, but me and 1 of my older brothers kept at it and still went every year bringing a few friends here and there. Nowadays instead of years of camping, we rent a house in Marathon off sister’s creek by Sombrero Beach. I bring my skiff, my bro brings his 22′ TE Pathfinder and our friends bring all the booze! We now have a normal group of 10-12 people that go every year, and every year still brings loads of fun and laughter! This year we finally get to drag my mom out for a weekend along with her husband, my uncle and his wife, she hasn’t been back to the keys in over 10 years, and instead of sleeping on the ground getting chewed by bugs, we had her in the master suite of a 3 bedroom 2 bath house on the water. She still preferred to stay in the kitchen and cook for me and all of my friends, but having her back with us in the keys was a huge treat!!
