Spinner Shark on Fly Fishing with Captain Quintin Hall
March 17th 2010
With the winds low for a change I wanted to get out. So today I got up at 330am to make the drive over to the east coast of Florida. I was over there by 8am to fish with Captain Quintin Hall and his buddy Capt. Dave Saddler.
One of the cool thing about the east coast is that is so close to the gulf stream. This brings constant life near the beaches. It’s not unheard of to catch sail fish and other offshore species right off the beaches there.
Today we were aiming for Spinner sharks on fly. Usually shark fishing is down deep and far away so you don’t see the eat. However this time of year the spinners sharks are very aggressive and abundant you can get them to take a fly.
Quintin told me it was a bit slow today but to me I thought it was pretty good. We got 4 eats on fly, several on convention and tons of misses. Since we wanted jumps and eats on top of the water the spinners missed a bunch.
Photo notes: it was very cloudy today so the photos lack color but I did manage to get a couple cool eats. Spinner shark jump shots are tough… I think they are tougher to get than Tarpon Jump shots.

Osprey Bird with fresh Lady fish and a few on lookers
March 16th 2010
Man I haven’t taken a decent photo in so long I feel like I’m getting a bit rusty.(been working on the videos too much) I glanced out the window yesterday and saw an Osprey snatched a nice size lady fish and landed on my dock. I ran out and take some photos as the sea gulls surrounded osprey hoping to make the bird drop the meal but no such luck. I got closer and close to try to get the bird in flight with the lady fish. He did eventually take off bu the shot was blocked by the dock poles.
End results.. the photos are a bit junkie… but at least got out there for a little bit.
Tomorrow looks to be some decent weather. I will attempt to get on some fishing done with out getting beat up.

2010 Maverick HPX-T Video, Completed, Flamingo, Captain Benny Blanco
March 16th 2010
One of the projects I’ve been working is a video for Maverick and Captain Benny Blanco. This one is of the new HPX-T, the tunnel hull boat they just revamped for 2010. Some of the new improvements for the 2010 is an extremely lighter hull. They redesign the cap so the console is moved up for better flotation and more room for storage. The old tunnel had very limited storage and small live well. They doubled the live well to almost 20 gallons. Plus with the addition of a jack plate it call now runner and idle shallower. Anyone who’s priority is to run super skinny waters this is their dream come true boat.
Video information: The title was me messing around with Adobe After effects and the video was shot entirely in Flamingo aka Everglades National Park.

Gulf Island Adventure Video Final, Everglades Mothership
March 15, 2010
I finally got around to finishing up the Everglades Mother ship video for Gulf Island Adventures. This was shot at the mouth of Lostman’s river in the Everglades. We did the trip back in the end of January 2010. Here’s are some photos from that trip.
The video is for the website so it is commercial in nature. I might make a b-roll cut of all the good times that went on there(R-rated due to all the adult language and beer drinking), casting contest, beer drinking, cursing, talking smack, more beer drinking etc.. lol
The 100 foot mother ship is based out of Ft.Myers Florida. The range is the Everglades Lostman’s river all the way to Boca Grand, FL (it will be there this summer). The floating hotel , is used not only used for fishing excursions , but for other events as well. Since it is right on the beach, they tell me it is being rented out to a bunch of spring breakers. (bling! hey idea, we could shoot an MTV house episode there.!)
In my opinion it’s the ultimate in comfort as far as a mother ship operation is concern. I mean we are talking, electricity, hot and cold water, separate bathrooms, showers, kitchen, 70″ screen satellite TV, washer dryer, kitchen, and a I probably missed a bunch.
Gulf Island Adventure Video. They will be using it on their website. Could use some more holding up fish footage. I guess I could add it later.
Youtube Version. If you like it please rate it 5 stars. thanks!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzsWKnfMwOY
I promise the B-roll cut, though it will be R-rated, will be much much more entertaining!
Slayer Inc. The Predator XXX Jigs head review
Spend five minutes on the phone with founder and CEO Chris Cenci and you’ll quickly come to realize what I suspect many have found to be true, this guy has an unbridled passion for fishing. Combining over 30 years of offshore and inshore experience, Chris noticed a need for higher quality fishing lures to suit his style of power fishing. With years of tournament fishing experience under his belt, he turned his attention towards producing lures that just weren’t available from most manufactures. Founded in 2007 Slayer Inc has positioned itself as the premier manufacture of high end fishing tackle for the inshore saltwater angler.
Slayer Inc produces two styles of jig heads, weedless jerk bait hooks, inline spinner bait lures as well as spinner bait lures. For the first part of this review I will be focusing on the jig heads and weedless jerk bait hooks. These two are the ones that I prefer and use the most.
The Predator XXX Jigs
Standard

Available in 1/16oz., 1/8oz., 1/4oz. and 3/8oz. sizes with 3/0 or 4/0 hook (3/8oz only available with 4/0 hook). ***3 jigs per package
“When fishing with soft plastics in deeper water we found that most of the jigheads we were using would loose their finish from scraping around the submerged rocks, barnacles, and oysters. We were also frustrated that most brands came in different weights but only had one size hook which was a disadvantage when we wanted to use different sized baits. The Predator addresses those concerns with a variety of weights, colors, and hook sizes in addition to its triple dipped finish and recessed holographic eyes which will endure the abuse of heavy structure fishing.”
I particularly like these jig heads for a couple of reasons, especially the fact they come in different hook sizes. I feel this is really important when using larger lures, such as the Exude RT Slug. I would use a 4/0 size with this lure, and scale down to the 3/0 for an Exude Gold Dart or DOA Cal. The other reason is the two prong bait keeper that Slayer Inc incorporates on their jig heads.

Weedless

Available in 1/8oz. and 1/4oz. sizes with 3/0 or 4/0 hook. ***3 jigs per package ****Red, Pearl, Chartreuse and unpainted.
“The perfect solution for fish feeding on the bottom while in the grass. Whether you’re fishing around spartina, turtle grass or hydrilla, this jig will give you the opportunity to present your bait to fish that have their nose down; all the while keeping your bait grass free. Awesome for tailing redfish!”
The Destroyer XXX Jigs
Available in 1/8oz., 3/16oz., 1/4oz. and 3/8oz. size with 3/0 or 4/0 hook (1/8oz. only available in 2/0 hook, 3/8oz. only available with 4/0 hook). *** 3 jigs per package

“Tired of using other brands only to have the eyes scratch or fall off when he fished them around heavy cover, Chris Cenci developed the recessed holographic eye of The Destroyer and added the extra quality of a triple dipped finish. Another design advantage came from Eric Taylor who expressed the need for a better bait holder so the plastic stays on the jig when being skipped under docks and mangroves. The Destroyer fits the bill for live bait applications as well.”
XXX Penetrator – Weedless Wide Gap Hooks
“The Penetrators are Mustad Ultra Point hooks which come with a marine grade stainless bait keeper. These fish slaying hooks are available in red or black nickel and 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 sizes with 1/16oz, 1/8oz, 3/16oz and weightless weights. The Penetrator works great with any soft plastic or scented bait rigged weedless”.

The weedless hooks were my first introduction into the world of Slayer Inc. As a big user of soft plastics, I found the usual weedless hooks just didn’t fit my liking. I found the hooks from Slayer Inc to be super strong, super sharp and totally superior that what I could buy locally. I especially like the larger style screw type bait keeper. Once you screw the bait all the way up to the gap at the eye of the hook, you get way more of the bait secured to the hook, preventing your bait from being dislodged once it gets whacked by that big redfish.

I prefer the 5/0 size hook, and the weight I use depends on the water depth and type of fishing I will be doing. If going after tailing redfish, I may choose the 5/0 in 1/16th oz. This setup works well on a Gulp 3” Shrimp rigged backwards. It’s already a heavy bait, so I like the 1/16oz weight as it will sink slower and not bury too far down in the grass. The 5/0 size works just fine on redfish, even pesky rat reds.
After talking with Chris for hours about the shared passion we have for inshore fishing, I have found my lure supplier for as long as he will continue to make them. Great customer service, reliable shipping (he usually throws in some extra goodies with each order) and a great product.
A quality product made by some quality people, check em out and make Slayer Inc your lure supplier today.
Look for part two of this review in the weeks to come as I will be reviewing the inline and regular spinner bait selections.
New Water Boatworks Stilts, Dons Bait and Tackle, Tundra recall, Windows 7 Upgrade
March 14th 2010
Saturday since it was blowing the usual 20mph I did more catching up. I finally had time to get through some mail, (no not emails). Low and behold my truck is on the recall list for the sudden acceleration that was all over the news a few months a go. Not that I am having any issues currently but better safe than sorry I guess, I will have to find time to get that repair under the warranty.
I am currently running Windows Vista on one of the desktop and decided to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit. The install went smoothly but let me warn you. If you planning on doing it make sure you have plenty of time on your hand that day. I have 8 gigs of ram and still took 3-4 hours to complete.
While browsing around yesterday one of my RSS Feed is the Don’s Bait and Tackle website. I got Ashley started with a simple website and he’s just going crazy plugging it with some great content. One of the links he put up was about a really cool looking boat by New Water Boatworks out of Texas. Bellow is of the stilt model. It would be awesome skiff for Florida! Looks like it was made to fly fish out of.

Fly Fishing Film Tour – Stuart, April 1, 2010
What’s up guys and gals… I will be attending the Stuart leg of the Film Tour this coming April 1st. I attended this great event last year and had a fantastic time with great comradarie, lots of prizes, and just a first class venue being at the Lyric. I was told that there will be a couple of films shown exclusively only at the Stuart leg of the tour so don’t miss out. Hope to see you all there.

Coastal Angler Magazine, a little organization
March 12th 2010
Well the last couple days the weather has been terrible so I had no excuse but to try to catch up on things. One of which is organizing the “review/how to” section of Saltyshores.
I went through the new Saltyshores, link and try to organize the reviews and how to as best as I can so it’s easier to find. There are some stuff still on the legacy website that are really good and I need to move that over as well.
On another note my friend John Donahue got my mug printed on the local section of Coastal Angler magazine. ..woo hoo.. “I’m going to Disney world..” thanks JD!
If you guys didn’t know it CA, along with their print version, they also have an online version of the magazine.
